Private Coaching

Private coaches run one-on-one (or sometimes small group) lessons with students generally for an hour or two per lesson. Although private coaching is not necessary, they are a great way for keen players to improve their chess.

Below is a list of some private coaches in the ACT (listed in alphabetical order). The ACTJCL does not specifically recommend any of the coaches listed below, but all of them have coached at ACTJCL events or in schools in the past and have a Working with Vulnerable People card. Different coaches charge different rates, so it is best to contact the coach directly if you want to know more.

Joshua Bishop: Hi, my name is Joshua Bishop. I am looking for any students interested in learning chess, from any level. I have coached complete beginners to more advanced juniors for almost ten years. I have also coached chess to groups, with students ranging from K - Year 10. I am situated somewhere between Tuggeranong and Woden, and can easily get to and from those locations. My phone number is 0451680790 and email is joshuabishop@outlook.com.au. Please feel free to email or call me if you would like more information.

IM Andrew Brown: My successes as a player include earning the title of International Master in 2011, having been joint ACT Champion three times (2012-2014), and winning the NSW Open and ANU Open (including in 2015). My coaching experience is primarily in teaching groups at Norths Junior Chess Club and ACTJCL coaching camps such as the Development Squad. I aim to tailor my one-on-one tuition to suit individual strengths, weaknesses and playing styles, and seek responses from anybody who has a keen interest in improving their game. I prefer students rated 800 and above but can sometimes make exceptions. I live in Wright, near Weston Creek. You can contact me via email andrewjtbrown@gmail.com - or alternatively you can call/text me on 0439 505 044.

WFM Megan Setiabudi: Megan has been playing chess for approximately 10 years and has won several ACT and Australian Junior titles. She has represented Australia in multiple overseas chess events including the World Under 16 Olympiad with the most successful the Oceania Women's Zonal (World Women's Chess Championship Qualifer) in 2011 where she gained her WFM title. Megan has coached at various different ACTJCL school holiday programs, has filled in as a coach for Souths Junior Chess Club and was regularly coaching at the Quirky Queens Girls Chess Club in Curtin for over a year. Megan lives in the Tuggeronong area and is looking for beginners to coach (Under ACF 500). She can be contacted by either phone: 0404 587 231 or email: megan.setia@gmail.com.
