This new club is designed for girls who love to play chess, and want to participate in a quality, structured program to
further develop their game while having fun and making friends with other like-minded girls.
Primary and Secondary school players of all standards are welcome, especially
Beginners who want to develop solid basic skills to play the game well. Participants are expected to understand the
basic moves but need not be expert.
Regular tournament players who may have experience in many events, or in participating in programs like Chess Chicks,
and want to continue to improve their game.
Ambitious players of all standards who might want to follow WIM Laura Moylan, WIM Emma Guo, WFM Shannon Oliver, Kayleigh
Smith, Gaya Sakthival, WFM Megan Setiabudi, Miona Ikeda, Alana Chibnall, Tamzin Oliver, Joanne Mason, and many others who have
held national titles and/or represented the ACT and AUSTRALIA at national and international events!
Coaches: Ian Rout and Jeff Suptut are our highly experienced senior coaches. Additional coaches will join the program depending
of the number of participants, and the level of play. A ratio of around 6 players per coach will be maintained.
Contact: Libby Smith by email or by phone on either 6291 7625 or 0439 311 047.
Time & Day: Every Wednesday afternoon during school term time from 3:45pm to 5:45pm, commencing on 16 February
Venue: Alfred Deakin High School
Cost: $10 per week, paid by the term. Payment can be made @ $10 per week for the first two weeks - as players make a
decision about ongoing participation. Payment for the balance of the term is due in Week 3.
Format: The first hour is spent on games.
Secondary school players and more experienced primary school players will play under a slightly longer time control (20-25mins)
and will be taught to record their games. Our coaches will be able to assist them in analysing the moves afterwards and this will
allow the players to progress confidently to play - if they choose - in more serious events. Although some find it tedious,
repetition tends to remove the angst from writing down moves and it leaves everyone with a very tangible record of how they improve
from week to week!
Reluctant recorders, and little participants, will play in a round-robin at a blitz time control, moving up and down within the
group each week based on their results. Players repeatedly winning the round-robin will move up to play under the longer format.
The second hour will involve small group coaching in a fun, supportive environment.
Club prizes each week, and each term, will focus on effort, participation, leadership and improvement. "Achievement" prizes
should come as our members compete in the many events and opportunities run by the ACT Junior Chess League throughout the year.
