2023 Canberra Secondary Open Final

Congratulations to Radford College for winning the 2023 ACT Secondary Schools Chess Final. They scored 22.5/28 to finish a point ahead of Lyneham High and Canberra Grammar (with Lyneham finishing 2nd on tie-break).
It was an enjoyable day, with 26 teams taking part. Thanks to Canberra Grammar for being wonderful hosts, with David Messina and the Canberra Grammar IT staff providing an excellent venue.

A perfect score was achieved by Jeremy O'Keefe (Board 4 Melrose High C)

The 2023 Australian Schools Teams Championship is to be held in Adelaide on the 1st weekend in December.
The ACT is entitled to send 1 team per section. The ACT Junior Chess League will conduct a playoff tournament if more than 1 team is interested in attending. The winning team (Radford) qualifies for the playoff, while teams who finish in the top 6 of the final, and have at least 2 players on the ACF Standard Rating list as members can nominate. (NB Only 1 team per school can register for the playoffs) A maximum of 4 schools qualify for the playoff, with the highest finishing teams having priority. (NB The reason for a playoff is that the ASTC is played at a longer time limit than the ACT events, and the playoff format matches the ASTC format.) If you wish to nominate your team for the playoff, please contact me. Only do so if you are committed to travelling to Adelaide if your team is successful.

A number of other ACT Junior events were mentioned at yesterday's finals. Details (and past results) can be found at www.actjcl.org.au/calendar.php Feel free to advertise these events within your school chess clubs.
